A carefully curated natural stone program for architects and designers programmed by Architectural Record, StonExpo, and the Natural Stone Institute. This multi-day program includes: 

January 24; 2 - 5 p.m. - Natural Stone Education Sessions

Session 1 - Case Study: Daniel Picco, Picco Engineering

Explore the versatile use of natural stone through the Utopian design of Spanish artist Jaume Plensa and the keen engineering provided by PICCO.

PICCO Engineering will provide insight for how to solve complex challenges when dealing with natural stone. With stone panels weighing up to 9000lbs, PICCO provided essential material testing and vetting, precision engineering, and innovative anchoring solutions. Their contributions included designing a robust steel frame system, efficient anchoring solutions, and comprehensive installation guidance. The result is a timeless masterpiece, celebrating the diversity of women worldwide, and showcasing the seamless fusion of Art, Engineering & Architecture at the heart of the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

Session 2 - Case Study: Projects That Fascinate “Case Studies of Projects That Use Stone As Inspiration”

Session 3 - Case Study: Natural Stone In Adhered Panel Technology and Applications
Speaker: Erdogan Akbulak, CEO, Silkar

Session 4 - Case Study: Innovation in the Natural Stone Industry including Sustainability, Technology, and Design Trends
Speaker: Daniel Wood, Natural Stone and Material Consultant, Lurvey Home and Garden
Description: This course will look at sustainability initiatives in the natural stone industry including the Natural Stone Sustainability Standard, Industry Wide Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Health Product Declarations (HPDs). It will also highlight the latest technologies available and the creative options that they are providing for the market. Finally, we will review case studies for award-winning projects that highlight the innovative use of natural stone materials and provide incite about the current trends that architects and designers are seeking.
